The Beacon has a baby!

Well sort of. Great excitement at Beacon Lodge this week, as the dracena at the top of the stairs outside my door has a flower bud!!!!!! The dear plant has been sitting there, unobtrusively, steadily, undemanding, for over 20 years, maybe close to 25, so much not inclined to flower that I didn’t even know it could. Turns out it’s a dracena fragrans, which apparently doesn’t flower indoors very commonly, but when it does, the flower has a strong smell, especially at night. We haven’t noticed this as yet – it’s early days and could be some time before the flowers are actually out. In the meantime, it is exuding a sticky nectar – you can see the droplets in some of the pics below. The buds look pinkish – not sure if they will end up that colour when they flower or paler. My neighbour Cornelia and I had are very thrilled – we feel like fairy godparents or something!

Here are some pics of us and the plant… including one shot (the final one) of a properly blooming dracena from the internet. The slightly fuzzy close up shows a glistening drop of nectar towards the top of the photo, and beneath it, on the bottom flower cluster (is that what you call it? – I don’t think so), a kind of clear wedge shape is another blob of nectar.
